[7/17] DLA dequantization and reshape stages - #2959
Add constant dequantization folding and the separately logged reshape/transpose/reduction stages to the internal DLA sequence. Part 7/17 depends on part 6; merge the series from the bottom upward. Public registration follows in part 16.
Fold supported fixed DQ inputs while preserving runtime controls, overridable initializer defaults, model-local functions and output types. The omitted zero point uses the quantized data type, and any consumer requiring quantized weights keeps the DQ node. The per-axis default is axis 1; scalar data and singleton controls remain supported. Existing equal float initializers are reused through the graph cache, while overridable names receive a fresh allocation. Narrow integer arithmetic uses in-place float32 operations; INT32 uses bounded buffers to retain its established rounding. Decoded and temporary payloads are released before protobuf copies.
Captured DQ outputs are retained using the existing nested-scope analysis. Reshape plans validate that every removed captured name is recreated before node mutation; refusal restores planned initializers. Captured terminal outputs remain supported. Transpose overlap is checked only after matching a complete second pattern, allowing unmatched final five-dimensional targets.
The computed scalar-control fixture declares its output rank explicitly for the shared scalar-only QDQ preflight; the production sequence already performs inference.
The reshape stages preserve each Q/DQ node's controls and attributes, refuse unsupported per-axis middleware before replacement, and restore added initializers on planning errors. The direct transpose stage reuses part 6's validated builder, resolving copied dimensions against their original shapes. Generated names use the existing allocator. Batch replacement preserves untouched Constant payloads; late-produced controls use dependency ordering only when needed.
This slice extends the internal sequence; the public entry point follows in part 16.
The transpose replacement builder records the proven Slice, Reshape, Transpose and Concat output shapes in the existing value-info metadata only after replacement succeeds. The following reduction and rank stages can consume those generated tensors without a new global inference pass, preserving rollback and native axis metadata. Eight new full-sequence and ordered-stage cases cover plain and scalar-QDQ paths with both CPU evaluators; all eight fail before the fix. The complete reshape-pattern file passes 37 cases.
Folded DQ nodes are removed by stable partition and one tail deletion, avoiding repeated equality scans while retaining existing protobuf node and Constant owners. A synthetic Windows CPU sample folds 2,000 nodes in a 22,001-node graph with a retained 64 MiB Constant in 0.071378 seconds versus 0.892830 seconds before the fix. Production sampled extra peak RSS is 14.6641 MiB; a full-list rebuild measured 84.8984 MiB and copied the Constant owner (2 ms polling). Payload bytes, retained order and exact weights are verified. Two redundant smoke-test functions are consolidated into shared-consumer cases covering UINT16 Add/Relu, INT8 Mul and public-output Identity preservation. Both ReferenceEvaluator and ORT outputs are exact; removing the Identity branch makes its new regression fail. All 44 focused DQ cases pass; the test module is 60 lines shorter.
Testing
Windows CPU: 2049 passed in 360.69 seconds across the complete restacked graph-surgery and compatibility suite with Python 3.11.18, ONNX 1.23.2 and ONNX Runtime 1.22.0. The public DLA API uses direct ONNX saving; existing initializer conversion and unrelated surgeries are preserved. Commits are signed and all commit hooks pass with the equivalent Linux mypy platform setting. GPU execution, DLA compilation and the complete Linux suite were not run locally.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds a transform that folds eligible DequantizeLinear nodes and three reshape-pattern passes. The DLA compatibility pipeline now runs these transforms with shape-inference and unused-initializer cleanup stages. Unit tests cover eligibility, graph rewrites, and output parity.
The transform checks node domains, inputs, attributes, types, and consumers before folding. Tests cover supported inputs and cases where folding is skipped.
Fold and rewire eligible nodes modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_remove_deqlin.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_remove_deqlin.py
The transform dequantizes initializer data, reuses or adds float32 initializers, rewires consumers, preserves graph output names, and removes folded nodes. Tests check numerical results, axes, data types, and graph updates.
Rewrite reshape and ReduceSum patterns modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_reshape_patterns.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_reshape_patterns.py
The reduction passes match reshape patterns, optionally with per-tensor QDQ, and build reduction replacements. Tests cover parity, controls, shape cases, capture handling, and rollback.
The transpose pass matches an eligible reshape–transpose–reshape chain and delegates its replacement. It can add inferred value information. Tests cover zero-sized dimensions, terminal targets, captures, and overlapping patterns.
Register transforms in the DLA pipeline modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/make_dla_compatible.py
The pipeline runs DequantizeLinear removal and initializer cleanup, then performs shape inference and applies the three reshape transforms.

Preserve DQ for every qualifying consumer.
A shared DQ output that feeds a quantized Conv weight and another consumer fails the len(consumers) != 1 gate. The transform then rewires the Conv to a float32 initializer and removes the DQ, violating the required quantized-weight path.

Addressed in 9324929. The skip decision now checks every consumer and preserves DQ when any supported quantized-weight use requires it. Four checked Conv cases cover shared/unshared uses with present/omitted zero points; the three previously broken combinations fail against the preceding source and now preserve the graph byte-for-byte.
@mgohil-png Verified by source inspection at 932492983b. _should_skip now checks all consumers and retains DQ if any qualifying quantized-weight use requires it.
The four Conv cases cover shared/unshared uses with present/omitted zero points. They assert byte-for-byte graph preservation and output equality. I did not run the tests.
This addresses the finding. Per AGENTS.md, I will leave thread resolution to a human reviewer.

Preserve or reject per-axis QDQ axes in the width-8 fast path.
The fast path accepts per-axis QDQ nodes but creates replacements without their axis attributes. For a 5D QDQ with axis=4, the rank-4 branches require axis=3. The generated nodes use the ONNX default axis=1, which can apply four scale values to the wrong dimension or make the graph invalid.

Addressed in 9324929. Both reduction routes validate Q/DQ attributes and known control shapes before adding replacement branches. Unsupported per-axis middleware is refused without changing caller serialization. A checked axis-4 vector-control case executes before refusal, and a second-pattern refusal test verifies rollback of initializers planned for an earlier valid pattern.

@mgohil-png The code addresses this finding. Q/DQ validation now runs before either reduction route adds replacement branches. Unsupported per-axis middleware raises ValueError, and refusal removes initializers planned for earlier patterns.
The regression tests cover a valid axis-4 vector-control input and verify unchanged serialization after both immediate and second-pattern refusal. I inspected the code and tests; I did not execute them.
This also matches the supplied validate-before-mutate guidance. Per AGENTS.md, I leave thread resolution to a human reviewer.

Reject 0 entries in the 5D shape and in the final Reshape target.
The pass copies shape[1:] and target verbatim into new Reshape nodes. These nodes receive tensors of different rank than the originals:
middle_shape is applied to a leading-dim-1 slice of the input.
final_shape is applied to the 4D Concat output, not the original 5D Transpose output.
In ONNX, a 0 entry copies the input dimension at the same index. The copied dimension now differs from the original. The rewritten graph then fails shape checks or silently produces a wrong layout.
_build_reduce_replacement_or_raise avoids this problem by calling resolve_reshape_shape for -1 and 0. This pass has no equivalent. Raise on 0, or resolve it from known shapes, before building the replacement.

Addressed in 9324929. The direct transpose stage now reuses part 6's validated builder instead of maintaining a separate implementation. First and final copied dimensions are resolved against the original shapes before rank changes. Two checked numerical cases cover zeros in each target; both fail against the preceding source and now produce exact matching values and shapes.
@mgohil-png The code inspection confirms that 9324929 addresses this finding. The direct transpose stage now uses the shared builder, which resolves copied dimensions against the original shapes before the rank changes.
The parametrized regression test covers zeros in both reshape targets. It checks the transformed model and compares exact output values and shapes. I inspected the tests but did not run them.

Replace per-node graph.node.remove(node) with one rebuild of the node list.
RepeatedCompositeContainer.remove locates the element by message equality. Each call scans graph.node and shifts the tail. The cost is O(folded DQ nodes × total nodes). Large quantized models can have thousands of foldable DequantizeLinear nodes in graphs with tens of thousands of nodes. This loop then dominates the pass runtime.
Equality matching also differs from identity matching. If two nodes ever compare equal, remove can drop a different node than the one folded.
Filter by identity and rewrite the list once.

repopulate graph.node with the retained nodes. This avoids repeated
equality-based scans while removing only the intended nodes.

Add a regression test for the graph-output Identity branch.
When a folded DequantizeLinear output is also a graph output and feeds another node, _apply_remove_deqlin must preserve the output name through an Identity. No current test reaches this branch. Add a real-path test that checks the Identity, removal of DequantizeLinear, consumer rewiring, and ReferenceEvaluator parity.

Addressed in a5b17c6. Consolidated the existing UINT16 and INT8 execution smoke tests into shared-consumer cases and added public-output Identity coverage. The checks require the original output name, consumer rewiring, DQ removal, retained Constant ownership and exact ReferenceEvaluator/ORT outputs. Removing the Identity branch produces one failing regression with two passing controls. All 44 DQ module cases pass.
Final restacked validation: 2035 passed; hooks pass and commits are signed.
Addressed in a5b17c6. Replaced repeated equality-based removals with stable partition and one tail deletion. A 22,001-node CPU fixture folds 2,000 DQ nodes in 0.071378 seconds versus 0.892830 seconds before the fix, retaining node order and the 64 MiB Constant owner. Production sampled extra peak RSS is 14.6641 MiB; the full-list rebuild alternative measured 84.8984 MiB and copied that owner. Exact weights, checker validation and all 44 focused DQ cases pass. Two redundant smoke-test functions were consolidated without increasing the module case count.
Final restacked validation: 2035 passed; hooks pass and commits are signed.
Keep the symbolic-shape import in its try block. Hoist only the onnxruntime import in _run_ort.
pytest.importorskip("onnxruntime", ...) already makes ONNX Runtime a hard requirement for this module, so the "optional" comments inside _run_ort are stale. The import onnxruntime as ort in _run_ort has no remaining justification. Bind the module returned by importorskip and remove the in-function import.
The onnxruntime.tools.symbolic_shape_infer import in _prepare_model is different. It sits inside a try block whose except Exception: pass intentionally skips metadata inference when that import or the inference call fails. Moving it to module top would turn an unavailable tools submodule into a collection error and change the test contract. Keep that import where it is, and reword its comment to state that a failure is intentionally caught.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
Usage
